Wilson Organized

The Hose & Nozzle, May – June 1970

A labor union has been organized at Wilson among the majority of city firemen.

City Manager T. Bruce Boyette told the City Council that he understood 34 of the 58-member fire department had formed Local 1932 of the International Association of Fire Fighters, AFL-CIO.

According to the City Manager, he was informed that Fire Chief Tyrus Bissett had received a letter from three firemen identifying themselves as officers of the local, and requesting recognition and representation in various matters affecting the fire department.

Boyette said he instructed the fire chief to meet with the men and reiterate the city’s policy regarding union organization and recognition with regard to current state law.
