The PFFPNC newsletter for January 5 – 9 is now posted and highlights the Mauro T. Messina Educational Scholarship, a program created to support members pursuing IAFF leadership training and to honor the legacy of Brother Mauro T. Messina of Local 3137. The scholarship supports attendance at the IAFF’s new Strive for Excellence training conference in Las Vegas this spring, an expanded event offering high-level instruction in leadership, communication, safety, health and wellness, technology, and fireground operations. Interested members can apply through their PFFPNC District Vice Presidents.

This issue focuses on the passage of the Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act, landmark legislation that officially recognizes occupational cancer as a line of duty death under the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits program—ending decades of denial and unfair burdens placed on firefighter families. President Scott Mullins reflects on the years of persistence and coordinated advocacy that made this victory possible, why it represents one of the most significant federal policy achievements for the fire service in a generation, and how continued support through NC FIREPAC and IAFF FIREPAC remains critical to protecting firefighter health, dignity, and survivor benefits.
